Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - The Carolina Hurricanes named Bill Peters as their new head coach on Thursday.
Peters comes to the team from the Red Wings, where he served as an assistant coach for the past three seasons, spending team mostly with the defensemen and penalty killing squads.
Before heading to Detroit, he coached the Rockford Ice Hogs, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks. While there, he led the team to a mark of 122-97-21 and two playoff appearances.
Peters takes over a Carolina squad that fired former head coach Kirk Muller after the team missed the playoffs for a fifth straight season. Carolina went 36-35-11 to finish seventh in the competitive Metropolitan Division.
He will be formally introduced as the Hurricanes' 13th head coach by general manager Ron Francis on Friday.
