Healthcare Symposium Teaches Management and Policy

Binghamton University hosted a symposium for physicians, hospital administrators and other healthcare administrators.

The 13th Binghamton Symposium on Healthcare Management and Policy took place at the University Downtown Center. The keynote speaker was Dr. Howard Zucker, the First Deputy Commissioner of Health in New York State.

Zucker's office is always stressing prevention as a way to not only improve health outcomes, but also lower costs. He says establishing electronic medical records is key.

"Doctors are so busy, they're running around trying to do so much. And patients are also extremely busy with their lives. So, how do we make this a little bit more easy for the information to flow?" said Zucker.

Another topic of discussion was physician retention. Our area recently lost nine doctors under the age of 50 who moved elsewhere, including some who have family ties to our region.

Some suggested that local hospital groups need to provide better student loan repayment help to offset the staggering debt many doctors are saddled with.
