Hamlin Mania in Upstate N.Y.

One day later, all of Upstate New York, but especially the small town of Remsen, a town north of Utica, is celebrating its new favorite daughter, Erin Hamlin.
One day later, all of Upstate New York, but especially the small town of Remsen, a town north of Utica, is celebrating its new favorite daughter, Erin Hamlin. Hamlin won a bronze in women's single luge yesterday, the first American athlete, man or woman, to win a medal in Olympic individual luge.

It's the single moment every athlete dreams about. Finishing, knowing you've won an Olympic medal.

Oneida County's Erin Hamlin, a Team USA luger, made the podium for a singles event, the first time in history.

Today, Erin is everywhere. Network television, the cover of search engine bing.com, and trending on social media. Tweets from Miranda Lambert, The Kings of Leon, and even Governor Cuomo are congratulating Erin Hamlin of Remsen, N.Y.

Erin was the favorite in the last Olympics, but when she placed 16th on Vancouver’s luge track in whistler, she already knew Sochi was in her sights.

“It was definitely a big goal of mine. After whistler, i was disappointed and that's not how i wanted my Olympic legacy to end. Four years from now, I’m coming back strong,” said Hamlin.

Not as comfortable where the ones back home. They watched every nail biting moment on a live stream. Finally -- the moment.

Many watched at a party at the F.X. Matt brewery in Utica, one of Erin’s favorite local spots. Excitement also spread from Russia right to Remsen -- and Erin knew it.

“I had a lot of faith in her. And no matter what she did we were going to be thrilled for her.

Now, that video of Erin luging for the first time in Schiller Park has added meaning, perhaps inspiring the next generation to go after their own dreams.

“I feel like I’m really paving the way for future generations of female lugers in the U.S. I'm stoked,” said Hamlin excitedly. “I can't even. Who knew?”
