Funeral Arrangements Announced

Funeral arrangements have been announced for the Johnson City Police Officer who was killed in the line of duty on Monday.
We begin with funeral arrangements being announced for the Johnson City Police Officer who was killed in the line of duty Monday.

43 year-old David Smith had been on the village's police force for about 18 years. He was shot and killed by an MRI Technician as he was getting out of his patrol car for a disturbance call at Southern Tier Imaging across from Wilson Hospital. Johnson City Police Chief Joe Zikuski says he expects a large turnout of police officers from around the northeast and other community residents to show up at the funeral.

Joe Zikuski says, "I got numerous emails, mostly from the northeast but some from as far away as Florida since yesterday expressing their gratitude. Locally here it brings us closer together, all the law enforcement agencies. We all tend to do our own thing until something like this happens."

Calling hours for David Smith will be this Thursday from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Chase Funeral Home at 737 Chenango Street in Port Dickinson. A funeral service will be held on Friday at 11:00 am at Sarah Jane Johnson Memorial Church at the corner of Main and Baldwin streets in Johnson City. Some streets in the area of the church and around Wilson Hospital will be closed from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm for the funeral, so drivers are advised that detours will be in place. An account has also been set up at Horizons Federal Credit Union at 120 Main Street in Binghamton where donations can be made to officer David Smith's wife and son. Chief Zikuski says that no phone calls soliciting donations will be made, so if you get a call contact your local police department. One other note, there will be a candle light vigil outside of the Johnson City Police Department tonight at 7:30 pm to honor Officer Smith's dedication. The community is invited to attend.
