Fractivists to Protest Astorino's Pro-Fracking Stance

A group of fractivists are calling on a potential republican candidate for New York State Governor to reconsider his stance on fracking.

This morning, a small group of people at Citizen Action in Binghamton said that Rob Astorino is misguided about the drilling procedure. The group was made up of people from New York and Pennsylvania.

Aubrey Clark,  a member of Vestal Residents for Safe Energy, fears that fracking in New York State could lead to water contamination and other problems.

"We certainly want to encourage him to take a tour of Pennsylvania and speak to people who have contaminated water and sample it if he thinks it's okay. I would like him to have some on the ground experience," said Clark.

Rob Astorino, the Westchester County Executive, will be in Binghamton this Friday for the Broome County Republican Committee's Lincoln Day Dinner. He has not made an official announcement about running for Governor yet.

He believes responsible gas development is needed to help create new jobs, which he says Broome and Tioga counties have been woefully lacking according to the State Department of Labor.

"It's an opportunity for the state to have billions of dollars in revenue, which would help lower taxes and create lower energy costs, to put tens of thousands of people back to work with all different types of skills and it's much needed energy. I'm absolutely in favor of it, doing it the right way," said Astorino.

The fractivists also plan to protest outside of the dinner, which will be held at the Hilton DoubleTree downtown.
