Binghamton (WIVT) - Nearly 50 years after they were taken, a local photographer is putting on display a series of images he captured during a year spent in Japan.

A Return To Japan is an exhibit of photographs by Dick Strong.

Strong was stationed there in 1955 while a soldier in the U.S. Army.

During his free weekends he traveled the countryside collecting pictures of iconic images of Japanese culture including geishas, sumo wrestlers and a hike up Mount Fujiyama.

"I wanted to be with the people. I got right down into the rice patties with the rice farmers. I went to the seaside and I was right there with the fishermen as they came in," said Strong.

Strong also photographed the ruins of Hiroshima and Nagasaki where the U.S. dropped atomic bombs.

The exhibit will be open this Friday from 6 until 9 p.m. at the SLS Gallery at 190 Front Street.
