Ellis Bros. Demolition Underway

Demolition is underway of the former Ellis Brothers Contemporary Furniture Building in downtown Binghamton.
Demolition is underway of the former Ellis Brothers Contemporary Furniture Building in downtown Binghamton.

The building was gutted by a fire back on April 30th and last week, a structural engineer deemed it at imminent risk of collapse prompting the demolition.

The portion of Water Street in front of the building remains closed to traffic as crew tear down the four-story brick structure.

Two Broome County legislators are promoting a resolution that would waive half of the tipping fees the owners would have to pay for taking the debris to the landfill.

Tony Fiala, who represents Binghamton's Westside and First Ward, says all of the fees were waived for victims of the 2011 flood and that the county should do its part to support a business that been around for over 100 years.

"The reason I'm trying to do this, is enticing, hopefully, them to rebuild or relocate in the downtown region. I hope this incentive shows that the county is there for them. We want them to stay. I'm a city legislator and I'm co-sponsoring this with Jason Garnar who represents that district. It's very important for us to show them that we're here in any way to help," said Fiala.

Fiala says he thinks the 50 percent waiver would save the business tens of thousands of dollars in landfill tipping fees.
