Discovery Center Hosts Fundraiser for Girl Battling Cancer

Members of the business community and the Discovery Center are rallying around a 9-year-old Binghamton girl as she battles an aggressive form of cancer.
Madelyn Shaw Day will be held at the Discovery Center this Saturday.

Maddie, as she's known to friends and family, was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma shortly after Thanksgiving. The cancer located in her hip had already spread to her lungs by the time it was identified. Maddie attends the after-school program and went to pre-K at the Discovery Center as well.

Saturday, the Center will donate all proceeds from admission to Maddie's family to pay for any costs not covered by insurance. Director Pokey Crocker says Maddie, who is undergoing chemotherapy, recently paid her after school friends a visit and the staff was inspired by her resilience.

"Everybody is right there for that child. It's the best I can say. At the Discovery Center, we just love our children," said Crocker. "And when one is hurt, we're hurt. When one is sick, we're sick. When one is sad, we're sad."

Her family reports that Maddie has been responding well to treatments.

Madelyn Shaw Day runs from 10 to 5 on Saturday. In addition to all of the typical fun of the museum, there will food, special activities and a wide array of fabulous baskets for raffle or purchase donated by many local businesses.

Her family says once their expenses are covered, they'll donate any additional money raised to the Golisano Children's Hospital in Syracuse where Maddie is receiving treatment.
