Combating Homelessness

The Homeless Coalition of the Southern Tier is counting the homeless today.
The Homeless Coalition of the Southern Tier is counting the homeless today. The federal government requires that the count be done in late January, which is typically when the coldest days of the year are. Last year, there were 233 homeless people around Greater Binghamton in the one day point in time count.

For the entire year, agencies and the count revealed about 950 people didn't have places to live. This morning, NewsChannel 34 followed a crew that was looking for people at the bus hub in downtown Binghamton.

"This count is crucial in helping us understand the issues of homelessness locally, common causes, community issues, backgrounds and where the gaps in services are," said Rebecca Rathmell of the Rescue Mission.

Davis College is also sponsoring a "Hoops for the Homeless" effort. Starting this Wednesday, people who bring supplies for the homeless to all home basketball games can get in for free. Some needed items, include gloves, hats, bottled water and Gatorade.

"One our purposes is to do be able to do what we can to give back to this community," said president Dino Pedrone. "So, we're delighted with what we're doing with our basketball team."

Davis College's basketball schedule can be found at davisny.edu. The College's basketball players will also be volunteering at the Rescue Mission in the near future.
