City Residents Fed Up With Criminal Activity

Several people living off Glenwood Avenue in Binghamton are fed up with criminal activity in their neighborhood.
Several people living off Glenwood Avenue in Binghamton are fed up with criminal activity in their neighborhood.

Claude Scott says things started to go downhill last year.

He says besides the robberies, some at gunpoint in the area, and a car-jacking, he has been threatened by groups of young people walking down his street, given the middle finger by them, he says an elderly woman was spit on, houses and yards have been vandalized and one time the criminal element even dug up someone's freshly planted flowers.

Most recently, he says someone was almost assaulted by a baseball bat near Glenwood and Hazel Street.

Scott, who has lived on his street for the past eight years, says he should be able to walk his dog freely and not be concerned by lawbreakers.

"When you've got a group of them organizing like they are here, it's bringing down the value of the properties and putting our elderly in danger and a foot patrol would solve that," said Scott.

Scott says the Binghamton Police should have officers on foot in the area, which he says would discourage the criminal activity.

Mayor Rich David says officers from the police's community response team have been sent to the area and they will have patrols on foot.

He has talked with people from Lake Avenue and understands that they are having serious problems.

David says steps are being taken to address issues.

"Just last week there were five arrests on Lake Avenue for a variety of different issues related to trespassing, related to drug activity. We are going to put a full court press on this and other areas of the city," said David.

David says two more officers with the community response unit of the police department are being hired, which will get more officers on the street instead of simply more patrol cars.
