Chenanago Forks S.D. Installs Solar Panels

The Chenango Forks School District has found a way to save taxpayers money by using solar panels.

Over spring break the panels started to be installed onto the roofs of the elementary, middle and high schools and the district's bus garage.

Forks will be leasing the panels over the next 15 years at a cost of $180,000. It will save double that amount of money on its utility bills, which averages out to $1,000 a month in savings.

Superintendent Joe Peck says the panels will save money and expand learning opportunities.

"In this day an age when we can do something academically and save the tax payers money it's very much to the benefit of the district," said Peck.

Teachers in the district will also be creating lessons and units that center around the solar panels.

Maureen Gregory is a teacher at the middle school. She says the hands-on experience will change the way students learn science.

"It will be a great thing that will just enhance our learning especially in the middle school when we try to get them excited about science. It's the perfect way to do it," said Gregory.

This is the first time the district has used solar panels.

The installation is scheduled to be completed in next month.
