Rapper/singer Cee Lo Green temporarily deactivated his Twitter account late on Monday after followers took aim at him for an ill-advised rape comment.

Cee Lo, real name Thomas DeCarlo Callaway, hit headlines last year after an ex-girlfriend accused him of slipping her ecstasy during a dinner date in Los Angeles in 2012 and then having sex with her.

A charge of sexual assault was previously dropped by police due to a lack of evidence, and last week, he agreed to serve three years of probation and complete 360 hours of community service after pleading no contest to a felony count of sharing ecstasy.

Green, who denied taking advantage of the woman without her consent, broke his silence on the case  Monday when he took to his Twitter account. In a series of posts, he wrote, "People who have really been raped REMEMBER!!! If someone is passed out they're not even WITH you consciously! so WITH Implies consent."

The tweet prompted followers to take aim at Green, and he later tried to make amends for the careless comments, posting, "Let me 1st praise god for exoneration fairness & freedom (sic)! Secondly I sincerely apologize for my comments being taken so far out of context...

"I only intended on a healthy exchange to help heal those who love me from the pain I had already caused from this. Please forgive me as it was your support that got me thru (sic) this to begin with. I'd never condone the harm of any women. Thank you."

Green deleted his offending tweets and subsequently shut down his profile.

However, his page was live again by Tuesday afternoon.
