A group of Binghamton University philanthropy students have announced $12,000 in grants to organizations around Greater Binghamton.

B.U.'s Philanthropy Incubator has both undergraduate and graduate students. They focus on community needs and the role that non-profits play in meeting those needs.

The courses, including grant money, are provided by the Learning By Giving Foundation and fundraising efforts.

Students evaluate applications that organizations submit and then divvy up the money.

"It has been great to be part of the process. I learned a lot about philanthropy and the importance of research before giving to an organization. Also, I've just loved being able to work with my classmates, Professor Campbell and all the representatives from the different organizations," said freshman Emily Venezia.

Family Planning of South Central New York, CHOW, Mom's House, Center for Employment Opportunities and Rise, which helps victims of domestic violence, were all selected to receive grants.
