American Civic Association Celebrates 75 Years

The American Civic Association is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.
The American Civic Association is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. The ACA provides a variety of support for families who come to Greater Binghamton from other countries, including English courses, refugee resettlement and naturalization classes.

Executive Director Andrew Baranoski says his organization is making a renewed push this year to raise awareness of its work and will be doing more fund-raising. The Civic Association will be screening a different ethnic film each First Friday, this year. It is also putting together a world refugee day, which will take place in June. Those are in addition to its regular events like the garlic festival. Baranoski says when the ACA helps people, the community is made stronger.

"When American Civic succeeds at keeping families together. When we succeed in helping individuals attain legal status, maintain their green card, maintain their work card, that's a plus for the entire community," said Baranoski.

The ACA will also have a time to remember the mass shooting when 13 people were killed at the facility five years ago. For information on upcoming events, log on to AmericanCivic.com.
