Broome County Arts Council Budget Cuts

The Broome County Arts Council is bracing for a funding reduction from Broome County.

Chairman of the Council's board, Jim Rollo, recently appealed to County Legislators to reconsider the proposed cut. This year, the Arts Council received $84,000 in County support. However, it is slated to receive about $15,000 less next year under Broome County Executive, Debbie Preston's, proposed budget. The main reason for the cut is because the County has had less money coming in from its hotel-motel tax, which is partly used to fund contract agencies. Rollo says the arts help spur economic development.

"I would say that the money that is being proposed to be cut from the budget is really cutting an investment that is really fueling growth in our economy," said Rollo. "We need to restore that investment. I would advocate that we need to increase that investment."

One of the things that the Broome County Arts Council provides is a United Cultural Fund. Organizations and artists can apply to it for operating revenue.
