Bernard the Bear at Binghamton Zoo

The Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park has brought in a friend for its spectacled bear.
The Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park has brought in a friend for its spectacled bear.

The zoo recently received a 22 year-old male bear named Bernard from the Buffalo Zoo to be a social mate for its 24 year-old female bear Chica. Also known as Andean bears because they're from the Andes, the two will soon be sharing an exhibit redesigned with the help of the Kiwanis Club. But, first they have to get to know each other.

"When you come and visit the zoo, you'll have two kinds of old elderly spectacled bears here. We're hoping they'll be getting along. Over the next few weeks we'll be introducing them to each other," said Maria DeSisto.

Bernard goes on public display Saturday in the middle of the day. The zoo will be open from 10 to 4.
