B.C. Arts Council Funding Partially Restored

The Broome County Arts Council is thankful that a proposed cut to its budget is being limited.
The Broome County Arts Council is thankful that a proposed cut to its budget is being limited.

Originally, Broome County's 2014 budget called for an 18 percent funding reduction for contract agencies, including to the Arts Council and Cornell Cooperative Extension. However, legislators heard an outcry from the agencies at a public hearing, last month. That prompted, lawmakers to reconsider. Now, the funding reduction stands at 6 percent, which means the Arts Council will get about $5,000 less next year.

"It's an acknowledgement of the importance of the arts to the economic development of the area. It's a cultural tourism element. It generates economic activity. The arts are job creators," said Sharon Ball.

The funding reduction does mean that the Arts Council will be able to award less money through its United Cultural Fund grant program for local artists next year.
