The RubberDucks cashed in on two free passes to draw first blood. B-Mets starter Tyler Pill opened his fourth start of the season by walking Tyler Naquin and Francisco Lindor. Giovanny Urshela made him pay by zipping an RBI single up the middle to put Akron on the board.
Pill settled in after allowing Akron to score in the first. The righty worked around an error in a scoreless second, posted a shutout third and struck out the side in order in the fourth. Pill capped his night by working around a one-out single in a blank fifth.
Akron starter Will Roberts tamed the B-Mets offense through six innings. Matt Reynolds finally collected Binghamton’s first hit in the fourth inning. His single off Francisco Lindor’s glove at short extended his hitting streak to 14 games. Cory Vaughn followed with a single to put two aboard, but the B-Mets could not break through with the timely hit.
Reynolds started another mini-rally in the sixth. With two outs the B-Mets shortstop ripped a drive into the left-field alley. He legged out his first triple of the season on the drive, but was stranded 90 feet from the plate when Matt Clark flied out to left to end the inning.
The RubberDucks took advantage of sloppy B-Mets defense behind Adam Kolarek to break the game open in the eighth. Dustin Lawley booted a ground ball to start the inning and Reynolds followed by bungling a potential double play grounder. After a sac bunt and an intentional walk, Bryan LaHair ripped two-run double down the right-field line. Tony Wolters capped the inning by lining an RBI single to left.
Binghamton failed to muster a comeback against the RubberDucks bullpen. Enosil Tejeda posted a perfect seventh, Shawn Armstrong struck out the side in the eighth and Kyle Crockett worked around a single in a shutout ninth.
Roberts (3-2) matched a career-high with seven strikeouts in the victory. Pill (0-4) allowed just one run on three hits in the hard-luck loss.
The B-Mets (12-9) continue their three-game series against the RubberDucks on Tuesday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Hansel Robles takes the ball for Binghamton against RHP Kyle Davies for Akron. Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
