High school girl's basketball recap, 12/29/17

BINGHAMTON - The 2017 Fighting Breast cancer Holiday Classic presented by 81 North Classic got underway on Friday.

The tournament features 10 teams from around the country in an effort to promote girl's basketball and raise awareness about breast cancer.

Some of the girl's participating have been recruited to top schools including Notre Dame, Syracuse, West Virginia, and Xavier.

Two of those 10 teams were locally-based with the host school being Binghamton High.

Union-Endicott is also a participant.

Speaking of U-E, they took on the Holcombe Rucker Lady Mavericks in the Jennifer Wegmann bracket.

Wegmann was honored at halftime alongisde event coordinator Greg Johnson.

The Tigers definitely brought their shooting game today.

There, Shaelynn Newborn knocks down a corner three.

Then, U-E moves it to Lexi Brooks in the same corner, and same result.

Rucker trying to get going, but Cailey Haynes with the sneak attack!

She collects the ball off the steal, and lays it up and in.

Haynes led the Tigers in scoring with 18 points.

But Brooks wasn't far off.

She knocked down some big threes en route to 16 points.

Union-Endicott gets the win, 68-36.

They advance to the finals of the Jennifer Wegmann bracket tomorrow at 4:00 pm.

After the U-E game, the Binghamton Patriots hit the court to take on the Boy's and Girl's High School Lady Roos.

This game was in the Lawanna King bracket.

She was also honored at halftime.

Kaziah Ross finds Lexi Gruss in the corner, and she drills that three.

Then, Annie Ramil with the steal.

She goes the distance for the bucket.

More from Gruss now.

She hits that from just inside the three point line.

Then, Gruss again, the drive and pull-up jumper.

She finished with a team-high 26 points.

Binghamton rolls in this one, 83-65.

They will play again tomorrow at 2:30 pm.

Out at Elmira High School, the Josh Palmer Fund Tournament continued today.

Seton Catholic taking on Bishop Kearney.

She finishes with the up-and-under.

Wilson with the turn-around fader, and she gets the bounce.

Later, Reese Vaughn finds Ava McCann and she knocks down a three from the wing.

Seton would go on to win this one 48-43 and advance to the finals to face Elmira who won tonight as well.
