Athlete of the Week: Devon Hogan

ENDICOTT, N.Y. - I will be highlighting some local athletes who have stood out among the rest in a new segment called "Athlete of the Week".

This week, I went to Union-Endicott High School and spoke with Devon Hogan, a senior who is one of the leaders of the 2017 Tigers football team.

"I like to build off of negative energy from people. Telling me that I won't be able to do things, that I'm too small or something, so I like to prove them wrong," said Union-Endicott senior Devon Hogan.

Union-Endicott senior Devon Hogan has been working hard for years to continue to prove people wrong.

Hogan is the starting quarterback for the Tigers, and has helped lead them to a 2-0 start in 2017, with wins at Elmira and at home against Liverpool.

"This season's going great. We're clicking a lot with our team, and I feel like we have a good shot at going far with this team."

The Tigers have looked strong so far this season, and that can be attributed to many things, including Hogan.

Head coach Tommy Baleno believes that Hogan is someone that the team can turn to when things get tough.

"He really evolved and turned into a really good leader. He leads by example, but he's also vocal. He has some great qualities to lead the team and lead people to make themselves better," said Coach Baleno.

Hogan is a great student as well, saying he gets mostly low-nineties in school.

But coach Baleno says that Devon is something even more special than just a great athlete and scholar.

"You know, being a leader, being great in school, and being a great athlete, there all fantastic. But, at the end of the day, it's are you a good person? And being a good person, having a good spirit about yourself is really what's important and that's something Devon has."

While the season and school have just begun for Hogan, this doesn't mean that he can't be prepared for the future.

"I mean I definitely want to go to continue playing football, and I want to study graphic design and business in college. Either major, or minor in either one, and then go work for a business. I mean, I love art."

For Hogan, college is just around the corner. But in the meantime, let's see how far he can lead this Tigers football team before he begins to design his own future.

You can catch Hogan and his Tigers this Friday under the lights at Ty Cobb Stadium when they host Ithaca High School at 7:00 PM.
