Young and old encouraged to work out to benefit the Tioga United Way

OWEGO, N.Y. - Young and old are being encouraged to work up a sweat to help raise money for charitable organizations in Tioga County.

Yeaman Athletics is hosting a Charitable Fitness Challenge this Saturday to benefit the Tioga United Way.

Every half hour between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., participants can compete in three categories: beginner, intermediate and advanced.

For 20 minutes, they'll do AMRAP (As Many Rounds As Possible).

The rounds will consist of 5 activities which could include sit-ups, squats, planks, nurpees, burpees, kettlebell deadlifts, ring rows, double unders, power cleanse, short distance running and more.

The challenge was the idea of gym owner Joey Yaman and Owego PBA President Tommy Woodburn.

"If a parent or a family had Mom, Dad and a couple kids, they could all get involved with this and do it together. It's about working hard but bringing people together, families, friends, that type of thing," said Yaman.

"The Owego Police Department is very community-based. We deal a lot with the local kids and even adults. Just to have fitness involved with family, it just shows that we're more connected with the community that we work in and serve to protect," said Woodburn.

Registration is $20 and participants are encouraged to find donors to sponsor each round they complete.

Prizes will be given to those who complete the most rounds and raise the most money.

Yeaman Athletics is located in the lower section of 103 Southside Drive in Owego.
