Wrestlers compete at SUNY Broome to qualify for nationals

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The best wrestlers in New York State will compete at SUNY Broome this weekend for a chance to qualify for nationals.

The New York USA Wrestling State Champions will take place at the Ice Center on Saturday and Sunday.

Over 400 wrestlers will be competing in 2 styles of wrestling, freestyle, which takes place Saturday and Greco Roman on Sunday.

Age groups include Novice, ages 11 and 12, Schoolboy for 13 and 14 year olds, along with Cadets at 15 and 16 and Juniors who are 17 and 18.

Team Worldwide Wreslting Club is sponsoring the 43rd annual event.

Worldwide Wreslting and Chenango Forks Head Coach Rick Gumble says participants rave about having the event in our area.

"This event wasn't here last year. A lot of people that went to where it was held last year missed Binghamton and they asked us to bring it back here. It's a reflection of our wrestling community," said Gumble.

The action begins at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Admission is $10 per day or $15 for a weekend pass.

The top 3 in the Cadet age group will qualify to move on to Nationals, which is held in North Dakota.
