Trooper involved in serious accident on I-86 named

CAMPBELL, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - The New York State Police and Strong Hospital medical staff held a press conference regarding Wednesday's accident on I-86 in Steuben County.

Trooper Craig Foglia was seriously injured in the accident that occurred around 4:30 p.m. in Campbell.

Police say Foglia had conducted a traffic stop and was sitting in his vehicle when he was struck from behind by a Ford F-150 driven by Kenneth Aukett of Westmont, NJ.

Foglia’s patrol car then struck the vehicle which he had stopped.

Aukett was transported to Robert Packard Hospital in Sayre, PA with non-life threatening injuries.

Foglia was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. He underwent surgery and his condition is improving. Doctors are optimistic about his recovery, but say it will be "prolonged."

Police say the accident is a prime example of why New York State has the 'Move Over' law.

The investigation into what caused Aukett to go off the road and hit Foglia's car continues, but police say Aukett did not brake before he hit Foglia's car and showed no indication of slowing down.

Police also say that alcohol does not appear to have played a role in the accident.

The fact that Foglia was inside his vehicle when the crash happened gave him a fighting chance, police say.
