Some of the downtown areas in Tioga County can apply for help in sprucing up their exteriors.

Tioga County Economic Development and Planning has recently announced their new Commercial Facade Improvement Loan Program.

Funding is available for up to $20,000 with 0 percent interest, which means recipients only have to pay back the principal of the loan.

Economic Development Specialist Teresa Saraceno says the new loan program is important in helping restore the historic downtowns in the county.

"It is very important, a lot of the downtowns in Tioga County are the historic buildings. They are more expensive to maintain, it stabilizes these buildings, stems deterioration, makes them more energy effiicient, replacement of doors and windows, repointing of the brick, and keeps our integrity of the buildings," said Saraceno.

The funding is only available to the commercial properties within the downtown "Main Street" areas such as Owego, Newark Valley, Waverly, and Spencer.
