BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Students at a local elementary school got into the holiday spirit by helping the less fortunate.
Thomas Jefferson Elementary School in Binghamton finished its Thanksgiving Food Drive for CHOW.
The annual drive began accepting donations on October 30 with each grade level competing against each other.
Students donated pasta, spaghetti sauce, fruit cups, and canned vegetables.
This year, 2nd grade won, collecting 1 1/2 barrels of food.
"I think for the younger grades they are excited because they want to win the pizza party, but I think for the older grades they understand more and it is just about the giving," said 3rd Grader Francise Ewing.
3rd Grader Sayeh Hajinazar said, "I feel happy for the people that don't get to buy their food as easily as we do. I feel that they will be really happy."
The total this year weighed in at 823 pounds, and helps CHOW at a very busy time of the year.
