Southern Tier Law Enforcement Memorial Assoc. memorial wall on display in Owego

OWEGO, N.Y. - A tribute to police officers who have given their lives in the line of duty is on display in Owego this month.

The memorial wall of the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Memorial Association is currently set up in the lobby of the Tioga County Sheriff's Office.

Typically, the wall is displayed each Spring during the annual Police Memorial Week in Broome County, but the association has decided to take it on the road this year to the other counties that it serves.

Thirty-nine officers along with two police canines from the State Police Troop C region are listed.

STLEMA President Paul Burnett says officers put their lives on the line every day.

"Just take a look at last week with the State Trooper in Binghamton.  That was so close that we would have been adding a name this year.  Thank goodness it didn't.  But it could happen any day at any second," said Burnett.

Although the Tioga County Sheriff's Office has never lost an officer in the line of duty, two Owego policemen gave their lives.

Isaac Wiltsie in July 1869 and then Forrest Hall 100 years later in October 1969.

The wall is expected to visit other regional Sheriff's Office prior to Police Week and then some local police agencies after.
