The American Army General who was killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday had a connection to greater Binghamton.

Major General Harold Greene's daughter, Amelia, recently graduated from Binghamton University.

The two star general lived in Virginia, but had grown up in the Albany area.

General Greene had just been sent to Afghanistan after being promoted to deputy commander of training. He was on what is described as a routine visit to a military training academy when he was killed. Twelve others were wounded.

Greene is the first U.S. general to die in a war zone from hostile fire since the Vietnam War.

Governor Andrew Cuomo directed flags to be lowered to half-staff Wednesday in Greene's honor.
