Shred and Med event to allow seniors to dispose of old documents, medications

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - An annual gathering will feature an opportunity for local seniors to dispose of some items that could lead to danger.

Broome County announced Monday that a Shred and Med event will be rolled into the Office for the Aging's Senior Picnic and Fun Fest taking place Wednesday at SUNY Broome.

It's a chance for people to get personal documents such as bank statements or medical records shredded by Bert Adams Disposal so that they don't fall victim to identity thieves.

They can also get rid of unused or expired prescription medication courtesy of the Broome County Sheriff's Office so that the drugs don't fall into the wrong hands.

Janette Cyganovich of the Family Violence Prevention Council says that when younger generations move away, many elderly people lack family support systems.

"We're hoping that for those who don't have family supports, that the community will rally around some of your neighbors, or some people from church, to try to support them," she said.

There's a limit of one box or bag for shredding.

The Shred and Med event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday in the parking lot behind the SUNY Broome Ice Center.

The Senior Picnic runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. both inside and outside of the ice rink.
