The mother and two daughters came to Binghamton from a zoo in Connecticut. Momma is 12 years old, Piglet and Miku are each 7 years old. Ross Park did not name them. The wolves are considered critically endangered. In captivity, they can live up to 20 years. Dave Orndorff is the zoo's animal curator.
"Red wolves historically are from the east coast of the United States, from east of the Mississippi to as far north as New York. So, if you think about it, what we're doing here is working with a species that was indigenous to this area maybe 65 or 70 years ago," said Orndorff.
You can actually see the wolves if you sign up for Courtship Tails, which is a Valentine's Day fundraiser that will be held at the zoo. The event runs this Saturday and Sunday and the following weekend. For more information, log on to RossParkZoo.com.
