BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Preparations are underway around the area to honor those who died in defense of our country.
In advance of Memorial Day, the Conklin Kiwanis Club has once again adorned the the Veterans Memorial on Conklin Road with a field of American flags, 60 in total this year.
A special dedication ceremony and community celebration will be held at the park next Saturday June 3rd at 11 a.m.
On Friday morning, Broome County Executive Jason Garnar held a news conference at the All Wars Memorial outside the Floyd Maines Arena to promote the numerous parades and ceremonies taking place on Monday.
Brian Vojtisek of the county's Veterans Agency says it means a lot when people attend the events.
"It's really a great feeling to see people come out. Not to honor us who are participating in the parades but to remember those who can't march in a parade, who didn't come home," he said.
And here are some other Memorial Day celebrations and ceremonies happening in our area on Monday:
At 10:30 a.m. parades will begin in Owego and in Endicott.
Also in Owego, at 11 a.m., there will be a service of remembrance spear-headed by Jim Raftis.
At noon, a memorial ceremony will be held at Four Corners at the Vestal Memorial Park.
And at 2 p.m., the Broome County Memorial Day Parade will process from Main Street to the Broome County domed courthouse on Court Street
