Preston Argues Against Local Intensive Treatment Unit Closure

- Broome County is raising new concerns about the slated closure of a secured unit at the Broome Developmental Center.

Broome County Executive Debbie Preston sent Governor Andrew Cuomo a letter today saying that it's a bad idea to close the Local Intensive Treatment Unit at the facility on Glenwood Road in the Town of Dickinson.

The L.I.T. is basically a jail for people who are not mentally competent to stand trial and houses everyone from alleged rapists to arsonists.

Preston says the state's plan of closing the locked unit and releasing many of the people into community-based settings will put residents at risk. There are currently about 70 people in the L-I-T.

Broome County says the state wants to move at least 30 of those people out, which has already started.

Statewide, there are currently about 700 developmentally disabled people in secured settings. That number is slated to be reduced to 140.

Preston says releasing dangerous people is not the answer, especially when it comes to trying to save money.
