Police: Driver caught injecting heroin into herself on I-81

MARATHON, N.Y. - A Cayuga County woman is facing charges after police say they caught her injecting heroin into herself on I-81.

New York State police arrested Kayla Rothwell, 25, of Moravia on Thursday around 9:30 p.m.

Police say a trooper stopped to check on an occupied vehicle that was stopped on the shoulder of I-81 without the emergency flashers on in the Town of Marathon.

They say the trooper saw the driver, Rothwell, actively using heroin by injecting it into herself as he approached the car.

A search of the vehicle found a small amount of heroin, several hypodermic syringes, and other drug related items.

Police say Rothwell was not found to be driving while impaired.

She's been charged with the misdemeanor of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th degree and other traffic violations.
