Organizers preview what's in store for Dick's Sporting Goods Open

ENDICOTT, N.Y. - The Dick's Sporting Goods Open is turning the corner after its tenth anniversary to host its biggest tournament to date.

Media Day was held Monday behind the 18th green for the 11th annual Dick's Sporting Goods Open.

The tournament takes place August 14th through the 20th.

Tournament Director John Karedes fielded questions alongside 2016 winner Paul Goydos.

Karedes is touting another strong field lead by fan favorites John Daly, Fred Funk, Craig Stadler along with Horseheads native Joey Sindelar and World Golf Hall of Famer Bernhard Langer.

Aside from the golf, Karedes is expecting a record crowd to attend the Friday night concert featuring Bon Jovi.

Karedes says the tournament continues to evolve.

"Our goal is to continue to make this tournament better and better each year. We want to make the fan experience just a little bit better. That's why we've looked at adding a few ancillary events this year, just to keep it fresh," said Karedes.

Goydos discussed his excitement to return to the area.

He says En-Joie is in great shape and the Champions Tour golfers are already looking forward to coming to Endicott, mainly for the food.

Goydos says unlike other corporate tournaments, the Dick's Open is all about the people who put it on.

"It's a community event. Most of the fans come from a 20, 25 or a 50-mile radius. There's going to be a guy in a cowboy hat asking you to sign stuff on the 3rd tee. He's here every year and he was there during the B.C. Open too. The marshal on the 5th hole and the 18th tee is going to be the same every year. It's like we get to get indoctrinated into your community for 7 days," said Goydos.

After media day remarks, a putting contest was held for a chance to win $5,000.

NewsChannel 34's Mike Tanzini missed a 10-footer and did not qualify.

Dick's Open Week features a pro-am tournament, a 2-day kids clinic, a UHS health day seminar, business tips from Web.com along with the Walk to End ALS.
