New York State Police Troop C holds memorial service in Sidney

SIDNEY, N.Y. - Members of New York State Police Troop C, their families and supporters braved the pouring rain Thursday for a solemn ceremony.

A crowd sat beneath tents and umbrellas at the Troop's headquarters in Sidney Thursday morning as troopers held their annual memorial service honoring members who have died in the line of duty.

An honor roll of fallen officers from Troop C was read along with the names of troopers killed in the past year in other parts of the state.

Major James Barnes says the day is too important for rain to hold people back.

"It gives us an opportunity to rekindle our friendships with the folks that have retired, the family members of our fallen members and those that have passed away since retirement.  It's a good day to get together, remember our loved ones and have a good lunch together," said Barnes.

Troop C also honored 7 former members who had passed away in the past year.

The ceremony included an honor guard, gun salute, the playing of Taps and Amazing Grace performed by the Edward P Maloney Pipe Band.

Each year following the ceremony, the Troop hosts a chicken barbeque for retired members, relatives of fallen officers and guests.
