New Vestal beauty salon promotes diversity

VESTAL, N.Y. - A new salon in Vestal is promoting its diversity in an effort to bring people together.

Hair Nail Studio opened last October on the Parkway across from the Town Square Mall.

Owner Catherine Cornelius, who also owns the plaza, created the business after a prior nail salon moved out.

She's hired a multi-cultural mix of hair dressers in an effort to appeal to a wide range of customers.

Manager Martha Mercado says its still too common for beauty salons to cater primarily to either just a white clientele or just a black clientele.

Mercado says the staff at hair Nail Studio reflects a wide range of ethnic backgrounds.

"There's no hair that we can't accomplish in here. We have Russian, we have Irish, we have Puerto Rican, we have Dominican, we have African-American, we have it all. So, I think we can tackle this together," said Mercado.

Mercado says the atmosphere promotes comfort and understanding among people of different backgrounds.

Hair Nail Studio offers a large variety of services including highlights and lowlights, hair and eyelash extensions, perms, relaxers, manicures, pedicures, waxing and teeth whitening.

The studio plans to offer free hair styles for needy job seekers.
