National Yoga Championship comes to Binghamton

- Binghamton (WIVT) - A national yoga competition has made its way to our area for a weekend of flexible fun.

The Holiday Inn in downtown Binghamton is hosting the National Yoga Championship.

Over 200 competitors who have advanced from regionals will show off their skills in the 3-day event.

A panel of judges will critique the poses for grace, stillness, and complexity of the pose.

Joseph Eacinia is one of the executive directors as well as a 3-time champion.

He said he got involved with yoga after suffering a heart attack 15 years ago.

"I started this yoga as a way to heal myself and then I looked into this yoga competition as a way to push myself. And about 11 years later I'm here in good health as a living testimony of the power of yoga," he said.

The USA Yoga Federation is the governing body of the sport of Yoga.

Eacinia said although it is a competition, the goal is to increase awareness for yoga and engage those who may not know too much about it.
