Mayor: Binghamton would lose millions in funding under Trump's proposed budget

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Binghamton Mayor Rich David is concerned about how President Trump's proposed budget would impact our area.

The Republican held a news conference with representatives from the Binghamton Boys and Girls Club and Actions for Older Persons to speak out against President Trump's proposed budget.

David says the Community Development Block Grant, or CDBG, program would be eliminated if Trump's budget passes.

CDBG provides $1.7 million in annual funding to the City which supports infrastructure, blight removal and parks improvements.

It is also used to fund programming at the Club and health care counseling for seniors.

Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Marybeth Smith says critical programs could be slashed if the grant goes away.

"What is more important than to make sure a young child is off the streets during the summer? We put them into a structured, organized and safe program where they can have fun, learn and be with people who care about them," said Smith.

David is urging City residents to call their federal representatives including U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillbrand, along with Congressman Tom Reed and Congresswoman Claudia Tenney.

He says adjustments would have to be made to make up the gap funding, which may include raising taxes.
