Maine-Endwell, Union-Endicott school districts turn to Broome County for tax collection

ENDICOTT, N.Y. - Maine-Endwell and Union-Endicott school districts are turning to Broome County to collect their taxes.

The districts recently announced that Broome County's Division of Real Property will take over the collection and enforcement of their school taxes.

M-E and U-E become the 8th and 9th districts to use the county for tax collection.

Both districts had already been using an outside vendor for the service so there's no expected impact to district staffing.

Instead, they'll pay Broome fees with an expectation of a modest amount of savings.

Real Property Director Dave Hamlin says they'll also be saving themselves from potential headaches.

"We take full responsibility for the tax collection. It takes a real burden off of the schools. Any problems, we handle for them," said Hamlin.

Hamlin says the public will experience improved payment options.

Taxpayers can mail in their checks, make payments online or at the Broome County Office Building, or twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Union Town Hall on Main Street in Endwell.

The new initiative is expected to bring $12,000 in annual revenue to the county.

The change begins in September.
