Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo is sponsoring legislation that would legalize the study of a commercial form of marijuana.

Industrial hemp, as it's called, has a fraction of the amount of THC, the psychoactive compound used for recreational and medicinal use.

Instead, hemp is used to produce fabrics, building materials, paper, food and biofuel.

The bill would authorize research by the New York State Farm Bureau and Cornell University as a first step toward larger scale production of this variety of cannabis.

The goal is to provide another economic opportunity for Upstate farmers.
