Lourdes at Home wins contest

- Binghamton (WIVT) - Lourdes at Home's growing physical therapy department has received some glowing praise.

The therapy team has won the Home Care Proud contest of the Home Care Association of New York State.

Lourdes was recognized for the work of physical therapist Kim Jones.

Jones worked with a patient with severe dementia that left her bed bound and mostly non-verbal.

Through a series of therapies, both physical and cognitive, Jones was able to help the woman regain her ability to speak and carry on conversations with her husband.

Jones said she used a variety of unconventional approaches, including music and singing, to help the patient find her lost voice.

"We really focus on the patient as a whole. We don't just look at them as a diagnosis. We get to know the patients, find out what they want to do, what they want to achieve, what their families want them to achieve, find out who they are as a person and work with them that way to help them achieve their goals," said Jones.

Jones said many of the therapies were integrated into everyday activities and that training family members to be consistent with the program helps to keep patients stimulated and engaged.

Lourdes at Home has doubled the size of its therapy department over the past year.
