Locals begin to remove snow from rooftops after massive winter storm

ENDWELL, N.Y. - Stella's aftermath has residents rushing to remove the snow from their roofs.

NewsChannel 34 caught up with employees of the Augustine Construction Company Friday while removing snow in Endwell.

Project Manager Mark Augustine says ice jams are more of a risk for damage on residential homes, rather than the amount of snow piled up.

When cleaning the roof, workers use a roof rake to remove snow from the edges, allowing the melting snow to run to the gutters to be properly removed.

He says heat will escape from the attic, causing water to rush to gutters where it freezes and jams up, resulting in an indoor leak.

"If you have an older home and if you don't have proper insulation, you're going to get icing. With this much snow, it may be drastically damaging to your home," said Augustine.

Augustine says his crews have cleaned 20 roofs Friday, with each job lasting about an hour.

He says his company has received hundreds of calls for snow removal.

Augustine says damage could result in costs of $5,000-$10,000.
