A Windsor middle schooler has gotten a jump start on paying for her college education.

Alexis Green, 12, received a $1,000 award from Kohl's.

It's part of the department store's Kohl's Cares Scholarship Program.

Green was chosen because of her community service efforts to help feed less fortunate students. Kohl's was impressed by her work.

She is one of 200 recipients of about 37,000 nominees from across the country.

Green helped start the program called Knight Pack.

"We sent packs of food home on the weekends. They may not have much food and aren't quite as fortunate. I wanted to help people and just feel good about myself that I'm helping other people, giving back to the community and caring about people in my community, in my school," she said.

To date, Green has purchased, sorted and packed more than 5,000 food items through the program.
