ENDICOTT, N.Y. - Local kids were draining buckets Sunday in the hopes of making to a national competition.
The Knights of Columbus held its annual Youth Free Throw Championship Sunday at the Our Lady of Good Counsel Church gymnasium in Endicott.
The contest is open to boys and girls ages 9 to 14.
Fifteen competitors were challenged to make as many baskets from the free throw line as possible out of 15 tries.
Winners have the opportunity to advance to state finals and then perhaps the national competition in their respective divisions.
Vestal Grand Knight Michael Restuccia says participation has been increasing in recent years.
"They're doing great. Everyone's happy, the girls especially. They're beating the boys," said Restuccia.
Restuccia says the competition helps to raise awareness for the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization.
Last year, 120,000 kids participated in over 3,600 local competitions across the country.
