Business owner donates $1M in scholarship funding to BU

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - A  business owner is helping high schoolers attend and graduate from Binghamton University with little to no student debt.

Bob Carr, founder of the Give Something Back initiative, has donated $1 million in scholarship funding to Binghamton University.

It will fund 50 full-ride scholarships for students at BU, with the first class enrolling in 2021.

Through referrals, Give Back targets students who would not have attended college due to financial hardship.

Candidates are required to maintain a B average in high school and they must take a college-level course.

Once they start college, they must maintain a full-time course load with a B average.

Carr says the scholarship allows students to focus on their studies instead of finding a way to keep paying for school.

"When you have debt and a minimum wage job, you're in a very terrible situation. Our program allows students to know that they'll graduate if they just do their part," said Carr.

The students are also eligible for PELL grants and other financial aid, leaving books, room and board, and other expenses covered by the scholarship.

The selection process is currently underway and recipients will be announced in March.
