Some local pre-schoolers celebrated reading today with music, activities and a favorite character from TV.

The JCC in Vestal held its 6th annual Literacy Day this afternoon.

The event began with a costume parade in the gym
followed by a concert by Johnny Only.

The Roberson Museum sponsored a series of interactive Earth exhibits and there was an appearance by Sid the Science Kid from PBS.

And every kid got to take home a free book.

"We want kids to be excited about reading. And we want books to come alive for kids. As early childhood educators, we start at infancy. Read, read, read, read. So, this is a fun event that we do for our kids and the community to get them excited about reading," said director Marlene Patrick.

This is the third year that the event has been open to the entire community thanks in large part to a donation from the Judith and Edwin Cohen Foundation.
