VESTAL, N.Y. - A local fitness center is using push ups as a way to support local veterans in our area.
KW Fitness located at 3032 Old Vestal Road is holding its 5th annual Push Ups for Veterans event on Saturday.
To commemorate Armed Forces Day, KW is instituting a push up program where attendees perform push ups in 90 second intervals, eventually reaching the goal of 12,000.
Around 100 attendees will collect either flat or per-push up donations from friends and neighbors.
Owner and Personal Trainer Kevin Webb wanted to join the Marines when he graduated from high school.
However, he was informed that he did not qualify due to a certain allergy.
"In order to get past that, there was a lot of testing that I would have to do. I took it as a sign that I wasn't meant to go into the armed forces. This is my way of giving back since I didn't serve. I found a way to give back to veterans now," said Webb.
The proceeds will be donated to the Southern Tier Veterans Support Group, an organization providing assistance to local veterans.
No registration is required and kids can check out a fire truck that will be on display at the event.
Last year, KW raised $9,000 for local veterans.
