Johnson City teacher named 'Technology Teacher of the Year'

JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. - A Johnson City High School teacher is being recognized for his efforts encouraging kids to work with their hands.

Scott Voltz has been named Technology Teacher of the Year for the Southern Tier by his peers.

Voltz, whose father also taught shop at JC, has been teaching at the high school for 11 years.

He's also the advisor for the Ski Club and helps to organize school hikes and other outdoor field trips.

Voltz says some students who struggle in school have found success in his classes.

He says the award has led to a lot of positive feedback.

"I've had an impact on them or somebody in their family or their kids. And other adults, colleagues here, the ripple effect is far greater than I ever really thought when I heard that I was getting an award. I didn't realize the extent that it was going to go to.  It's nice," said Voltz.

Voltz says he strives to help students learn to take projects from design phase to completion.

The local chapter of the New York State Technology and Engineering Educators Association plans to recognize him at its dinner Thursday evening in Endwell.
