A group of people are concerned about what they believe is Broome County's goal of privatizing its nursing home. Citizen Action and several labor organizations recently hosted a meeting where people could express their concerns on a variety of county issues.

Karen Carpenter has a family member who lives at the county run Willow Point Nursing Home in Vestal. She also works for the CSEA union. Carpenter says Willow Point is a safety net for Broome County residents who don't have the money to stay in privately run nursing homes. She also says out-sourcing nursing home services could place an emphasis on profit, not service.

"We elect the people who make the decisions about the transit system and our public nursing home," said Carpenter. "That's how we have accountability over how our money is used."

Deputy County Executive John Bernardo says the County is awaiting the results of a study on Willow Point about both a short and long term plan for the nursing home. He says the study is designed to show the County how it can do business more cost effectively while providing the best care for residents. Bernardo says the County's goal is not to privatize the home.
