GREENE, N.Y. - A church in Greene has stepped up its efforts to give Christmas presents to needy children in Third World countries.
Berean Bible Church is now a collection site for Operation Christmas Child.
The program, which was started by the charity Samaritan's Purse in 1993, collects shoe boxes full of small gifts to send overseas.
The boxes include small toys, school supplies and personal hygiene items along with scripture.
Logistics Coordinator Stephanie Barrett says that for many of the kids, it's the first gift they've ever received.
"I love the ministry. I love working with kids and giving out gifts. I mean, who doesn't love giving out gifts?" said Barrett.
Berean Bible's parishoners donated 230 boxes and the church has already collected another 200 so far.
The collection continues through next Monday.
Donors can drop off their boxes each day between noon and 3 p.m. at the back entrance to the church on Route 12.
Other local collection sites include Calvary Community Church in Johnson City, Lakeview Chapel in Owego and the First Baptist Church in Sidney.
