Green Right Now: Green Household Cleaners

While it's easy to buy cleaners at grocery and discount stores, you pay for the convenience and you certainly wouldn't want kids getting into them.

Knowing what it's in the cleaners for your bathroom, oven and laundry, can be comforting.

For instance, for Soft Scrub, you can use one-quarter cup of baking soda; vegetable oil soap, enough to make baking soda into a creamy paste, then scoop onto a sponge and wash the surface and rinse thoroughly.

"Green cleaning products can be really effective as a lot of the commercial products are, but you're going to gain a little more trust in knowing what exactly is going into them. You can find many recipes for green cleaning products online or in books that have different recipes for glass cleaners to oven cleaners to furniture polish so there are lots of alternatives out there," said Debra Smith, Broome County's Materials Recovery Manager.
